Campaigns in Asia & the Middle East

• Making a grant to the Independent Film & Television School to enable them to set up training courses in war–torn Baghdad and mounting an appeal for funds and equipment on their behalf.

• Protesting against the inhumane treatment of an Iranian actress sentenced to 74 lashes for kissing an actor on stage.

• Giving a grant to the Al Kasaba Theatre, in the West Bank town of Ramallah, which was in dire straits as a result of the Middle East crisis.

• Mounting a successful campaign to secure the release of two comedians sentenced to imprisonment in Burma for their satirical performances.

• Financing the rebuilding of a theatre stage following floods in Bangladesh.

• A vigorous, and eventually successful, campaign on behalf of the Tibetan musician and performer, Ngawang Cheophal, imprisoned by the Chinese authorities because of his art.

• Campaigning for and helping to secure the release of an Indonesian actress arrested for her performances.
